CHOIRBOYS was a band that was around when AC/DC were around. They were signed to the same label, they used the same producer, and they recorded their first album in the same studio that AC/DC did their first six albums in – so CHOIRBOYS have a history. The premise behind what they’ve been doing is reliving what they represented, particularly in the 70s.
Choirboys formed in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney as a hard rock pub band in 1979 with mainstays Mark Gable on lead vocals, Ian Hulme on bass guitar, Brad Carr on lead guitar and Lindsay Tebbutt on drums. After one of their demos was sent to Albert Productions record producer George Young (ex-The Easybeats, older brother of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC) they signed to Albert Records in 1982. Jim Manzie produced their self-titled debut album, Choirboys, which was released in July 1983. The first single, "Never Gonna Die" followed in August and reached No. 30 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart. Australian TV and music personality Ian "Molly" Meldrum claimed the album was "destined to become an Aussie classic". They toured as support to The Angels and Rose Tattoo and then Cold Chisel invited Choirboys to support them on their Last Stand Tour. However in November, Gable's vocal cords had ruptured and they were unable to join that tour – they spent 1984 and 1985 in hiatus waiting for him to recover.
Changed to The Choirboys with preparation for the sophomore album Big Bad Noise in 1988. The band whose set-up saw many changes went on to release 8 studio albums from 1983 to 2007. Their 1987 single "Run to Paradise" remains their biggest commercial success.
The iconic CHOIRBOYS are now an essential part of our Australian culture having penned one of Australia’s unofficial anthems ‘Run To Paradise’. With other great Aussie rock hits such as ‘Boys Will Be Boys’ and ‘Never Gonna Die’, CHOIRBOYS epitomise the essence of the Australian pub-culture are viewed by many as the quintessential Australian rock band. It is a fact that CHOIRBOYS have been entertaining the young and old for 30 years. They have multi-platinum albums and have survived when so many others have fallen.
